An unnamed man has been arrested by the Lagos state police command for allegedly strangling his lover to death at Orile. He was said to have committed the offence last Sunday during a scuffle between them. He later abandoned the victim, identified as Miss Joy Okonikhere in his apartment.
According to sources, his neighbours discovered her dead body and notified the police immediately, who started a manhunt for him.
The deceased’s father, Mr Okhonikere revealed that the suspect was yet to explain what led to the fight between them. In his words: “He has not been forthcoming on the cause of the scuffle. He has been saying different things. I am in Benin at the moment for the burial but the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID). You can go to the police for information.”
A family friend, identified as May Ebute shared the news on social media and said the suspect claimed he only put his hand on the victim’s neck.
She said: “He said during the scuffle, he just put his hands around her neck to scare her and she stopped breathing. He said he didn’t mean to kill her. How can just putting your hands around someone’s neck kill her if not that the person was strangled? “Well she’s dead now and no amount of ‘l didn’t mean to kill her’ will bring her back. I just spoke with her brother and he confirmed the news. The murderer is with the police. I wish l could find the words to express the anger l am feeling now.”
Investigation shows that the girl just graduated from the University and lived in Lagos with her parents.
As parents, we should be very watchful of the kind of friends our older children keep. When they are mature enough to be in a relationship, we should ensure that a bit of background check is done on the partner.
