Breastfeeding has been the topic of much interest at all times. There’s no refuting the fact that breast milk is the best nutrition for your infant. However, there are still many myths that surround breastfeeding. Here are some of the common ones:

  1. Breastfeeding causes inconvenience to women

Though initially it may seem like this, but if you look at the larger picture then breastfeeding is much easier and convenient than the troubles of preparing the formula and feeding the child in bottles. So it’s a myth that breastfeeding causes loads of trouble and inconvenience to women.

  1. Breastfeeding means pain to women

Initial discomfort remains till the child latches on, but other than that it is not at all painful. In fact you can enjoy watching TV or listening to music while comfortably feeding your child.

  1. Breastfeeding makes it difficult for women to shed those extra maternity weight

Rather it’s quite the opposite. Breastfeeding women naturally burn more calories, approximately 300-500 more calories per day. Thus, breastfeeding in fact helps you in your weight loss plan by helping you shed weight in a healthy manner.

  1. Breastfed babies do not get proper water

Breast milk is perfect for babies and has the required amounts of water as needed by the child. So breastfed babies don’t need to be provided with extra water from outside.

  1. Formula milk is equivalent to breast milk

Pick up any formula carton and this myth will be busted because it’s clearly written that breast milk is the best milk for your baby. This is because through breast milk baby gets those antibodies from mother which are so helpful for fighting off infections and minor ailments. This can’t be provided through formula feed.

  1. Breast milk is not good when the child is suffering from vomiting or diarrhea

Rather the opposite of this is true. The best thing for the infant who is suffering from vomiting and diarrhea is breast milk. So do not stop giving it to your child, you’ll be depriving your child of important nutrients by doing so.

  1. Breastfeeding robs women off all dignity

Many people think that when kids need to be fed in public, it robs women off all dignity as everyone can stare at their naked chest. This need not be the case. There are many lactating garments available in the market which help you to do it publicly in a very private manner by holding on to your dignity and self-respect.

Breast milk is the best gift that you can give to your child. So don’t let these myths get in the way of your breastfeeding experience. Enjoy your motherhood by providing what’s best for your child.
