Hello guys! Hope you had Ana amazing weekend. Our entrepreneur of the week is a luxury jeweler, Anjola. She is relatively new to the entrepreneurial scene. After she completed her compulsory NYSC for a year, she decided that needed another source of income. Read her insightful interview below;
Tell us about your background.
My name is Anjolaoluwa LEIGH. I’m from a family of four, the second child, and the only girl. I’m from Lagos state by the way, incase you were wondering where the surname came from. I studied Psychology at the University of Ibadan, graduated in 2016. I recently completed my NYSC (April 2018). If I were asked to describe myself in three words, I would say Sensitive, Creative, and Determined. I deeply enjoy peace, ambience, simplicity, and serenity.
How did you start your business?
Well, as NYSC was winding to a close, I began thinking about new prospects, and new ideas, as I would be starting a new phase of my life. I decided I was going to venture into business, and I considered a few options. After a lot of thinking and researching, I opted for buying and reselling jewellery. It wasn’t really a tough decision because I’ve always been utterly in love with jewellery, and even amongst my friends, I’m the go-to person when it comes to jewellery. From my research, I discovered that for the kind of jewellery I wanted to sell, I would have to import from China and some parts of Europe with the aid of an online market platform. I started work, got in touch with the sellers, placed my orders and got my products.
How did you get funds to start your business?
PERSONAL FUNDS. I was able to save a little money from NYSC, and with that I started my business.
Have your parents been supportive so far?
Definitely! And I’m so grateful to them for this. I let my mum in on the idea right from the start, but I was a bit skeptical about telling my dad because he was never the one to edge us towards being entrepreneurs. He’s the “read-your-book” type. I finally mustered up the courage to tell him and I was pleasantly surprised about how well he took it. He was very enthusiastic and that was all the encouragement I needed.
What inspired you to be an entrepreneur
Like I said earlier, life outside NYSC opened my eyes to the fact that I needed to have something in the pipeline. Also, owning a business of my own was something I’ve always wanted to do so when the opportunity presented itself, I took it!
Who is your role model in your line of business?
Hmmm..that would be Charles Lewis of Tiffany and co, Per Enevoldsen of Pandora, and Maroolarte.
What hurdles have you faced as an entrepreneur in Nigeria.
For now, I source my products from outside the country, and the major challenge I’m facing is the
exchange rate. it’s killing! It affects how much products I’m able to buy at a time, and it also affects how much profit I’m able to put on each jewellery I sell. People won’t buy your stuff if they’re too expensive, and at the same time, I wouldn’t want to sell at a loss. So, it’s a major challenge. Another hurdle I’m facing is attracting the right audience to my page. I operate mostly online, and it’s been a struggle getting the right attention to my page. I believe it’s this way because I’m just starting out, and so it’ll get better with time. Also, the kind of jewellery I sell is very unique and isn’t so popular yet(cubic zirconia), so people don’t really know the value and sometimes people feel like they’re a bit expensive.
Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?
I’ll definitely be producing my own jewellery! By God’s grace.
Well, my advice is simple, believe in yourself, believe in your dreams, and do not be afraid to take that step!
