Most students are not receiving adequate career education while in high school and as a result end up in careers that are not a good fit for them and are unprepared for their journey through life.
75% of university graduates are stuck in jobs not related to their education or passion. Many got into careers influenced by their parents, choosen high income jobs without self fulfillment or just picked what was available. Not having a job that brings a person joy and relevance can lead to disengagement, poor productivity, substance abuse, mental health issues, and lack of fulfillment.
Let’s take a look at it from the excitement of buying and owning a car. Everyone looks forward to buying a car some day and you wouldn’t buy a CAR without taking it for a test drive, so why would you choose your future CAREER without test driving it? It’s more important now than ever that teenagers think about their career goals before graduating high school.
Here is the story of 15 year old Adaeze for example…
Since she was a little kid, Adaeze has always wanted to be a doctor and her mum knew that for sure. She would play doctor and patient dramas with her teddy bears, ask doctors lot of questions at the hospital and once, she requested for a stethoscope for Christmas gift. So during the holiday 15 year old Adaeze spent 10 days at NuWOW, a hands on career exploration program for high schoolers interested in Medical and Health Care Profession .
After the program, Adaeze shares her experience, saying “this has confirmed my strong interest to go into medicine and specialize as a surgeon”. I enjoyed every moment of it…from cutting things open and suturing them back together, to learning how to take patients personal and vital sign information, to learning how to handle babies and emergencies”.
“Every day there was a hands-on experience and a lecture from professional doctors. I met some interesting doctors in Nigeria, worked with simulators, and got the feeling of what it’s like to be a doctor”.
Adaeze came face-to-face with her future when she attended NuWOW’s Medical and Health Care Program for high school students.
By engaging in career explorations and going to career themed programs from an early age, you’ll grow your network early, meet professional contacts, leverage them to create opportunities, get first hand exposure to that field and have a head start figuring out what you want to do after high school.
